Zum Deutschen is a small, privately run guest house at Warahena in Bentota, on Sri Lanka's south-west coast. With just five rooms set around a garden and an outdoor pool, it is a quiet, home-style place to stay a short way inland from the beaches of Bentota and Induruwa, and the hosts speak both German and English.
The guest house stands at Thunniyara-Watta in Warahena, between Bentota and Induruwa and a little inland from the coast road. Bentota Beach is under 2 km away. The nearest railway stations on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle are Induruwa, about 1.9 km away, and Bentota, about 2.3 km away, with Aluthgama about 3.2 km to the north.
The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) runs around Colombo and down the coast, and usually takes around 2 hours, depending on traffic. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the guest house in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Zum Deutschen.
The five rooms are simple and clean, each with air conditioning, a large bed and its own terrace, and bed linen, towels and daily housekeeping are provided. Free Wi-Fi and free private parking are available, and guests can use a shared kitchen with a fridge, toaster and stovetop if they want to prepare their own meals.
Breakfast is served each morning, with a continental or buffet spread that includes local specialities, fresh pastries and fruit, and it is taken on the terrace. In the evenings the garden has barbecue facilities, an outdoor fireplace and a picnic area, and the restaurants and cafés of Bentota and Induruwa are a short drive away.
Days here usually split between the pool and garden at the guest house and the beaches of Bentota and Induruwa nearby, and massages can be booked through the hosts. Bentota is known for water sports on the river and the sea, boat rides through the mangroves of the Bentota River, the turtle hatcheries along the coast towards Kosgoda, and Brief Garden, the garden created by the artist Bevis Bawa. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the guest house.
