Jetwing Kaduruketha is an agro-luxury hotel of 25 village-style dwellings among working paddy fields at Wellawaya, in the foothills below Ella. It has a mountain backdrop and a pool looking over the rice. Built by Jetwing Hotels in the manner of a traditional farming village, it grows its own organic produce for the kitchen, and every dwelling comes with a butler and a pair of bicycles for exploring the estate.
All the dwellings are free-standing, with a king-size bed, an open-plan layout, a shower with hot and cold water, a minibar, tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes, Link Natural toiletries, free Wi-Fi, two bicycles and a 24-hour butler. They come in two types, named after the officials of a traditional Sri Lankan village, and the names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.

Under the hotel's field-to-fork approach, vegetables grown on the estate and organic produce go into every meal. Kahawanu, the main restaurant, sits above the swimming pool with wide views of the paddy fields and serves Sri Lankan food, and Authentically Sri Lankan offers regional dishes from family recipes using local ingredients and spices. The Main Bar has a wine cellar. Jetwing's signature dining includes meals out on the paddy fields, candlelit dinners on the farmland, a traditional village lunch, poolside dining and private dinners at your dwelling.
The 230-square-metre swimming pool, with its tiled-roof pavilions, looks across the rice towards the hills. You can cycle round the estate on your dwelling's bicycles, join the Kaduruketha paddy walk to learn how rice is grown, or go out after dark with the resident naturalist on a nocturnal walk. There is also a spa with treatments inspired by traditional medicine, and a library.
The small town of Wellawaya is the crossroads of the south-east. Close by is the rock-cut Buduruwagala, with its towering standing Buddha carved into the cliff, and a little further east the great standing statues of Maligawila and the Dambegoda Bodhisattva. The road north climbs past Ravana Falls to Ella, and Diyaluma Falls, one of the island's highest waterfalls, is within reach for a day. For wildlife, Jetwing puts the leopard safaris from the Weheragala entrance of Yala National Park a little over an hour away, and elephant safaris in Udawalawe National Park at about an hour and a half.
The hotel is about 143 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, and the drive across the island or around the south coast is considerably longer, so most guests break the journey or arrive as part of a tour. The simplest way to get there is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing Kaduruketha, which takes you all the way to the door. It also fits neatly between Ella and the south coast or Yala.
It suits couples and families who want rural Sri Lanka at a slow pace, with cycling, walks and farm-grown food, and travellers linking the hill country around Ella with a safari at Yala or Udawalawe.
