Laya Beach is a small beachfront hotel in Wadduwa, run as part of the Laya group of hotels founded by the Sri Lanka Army Welfare Directorate, alongside Laya Safari in Yala, Laya Leisure in Kukuleganga and Laya Waves in Kalkudah. It has 20 rooms, all facing the Indian Ocean, and a swimming pool that looks out over the sea, with direct access to the beach.
The hotel stands on the Galle Road at Thalpitiya North in Wadduwa, on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, with the beach directly in front of it. Colombo is roughly 30 km to the north along the coast. The nearest railway stations are Pinwatte, about 1 km away, and Wadduwa, about 2 km away, both on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 75 km from the hotel by road, and the drive around Colombo and down the coast usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the hotel in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Laya Beach.
The hotel lists its 20 rooms as Super Deluxe Rooms, each with a balcony facing the ocean and views of the sunset over the water. Rooms are air-conditioned, with a private bathroom, a flat-screen television and a fridge.
The hotel restaurant serves seafood, Sri Lankan and European dishes, with vegetarian options, and there is a bar for drinks by the sea. The hotel also holds weekend buffets and barbecue seafood nights.
Besides the pool and the beach, there is a beach volleyball court, and spa treatments are offered. Laya Beach is also a popular venue for weddings and events, with a two-floor banquet hall seating up to 400 guests that opens onto the beach, and the Pickwick Beach Hut for smaller private gatherings. Parking and Wi-Fi are free for guests.
Wadduwa is a quiet beach town, so most days here are spent on the sand, in the pool or watching the sun go down over the ocean. Further south are the turtle hatcheries of the south-west coast, the historic city of Galle with its fort, and Mirissa, the base for whale-watching trips in season, while Colombo is close enough for a day of shopping and sightseeing. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the hotel.
