Red Cliffs is a three-bedroom villa by Geoffrey Bawa on a clifftop promontory at Mirissa, looking over Weligama Bay and Mirissa Harbour. Built as the Jayewardene family's holiday house, it is an open-plan pavilion with an infinity pool, a large lawn and steps down to private beaches, run with its own cook and housekeeping staff.
The villa has three air-conditioned en-suite bedrooms: a family room with a queen-size bed and an extra single bed, a double room with a queen-size bed and a twin room with two single beds. The raised master bedroom sits on a higher level of the garden above the living pavilion, with wide views over the garden and the bay, while the other two bedrooms are on the level below and look into a sheltered courtyard. Each bedroom has a bathroom with a walk-in shower, a writing table, a smart TV, a safe and a hair dryer. You book Red Cliffs in one of three ways:
Only the Full Villa guarantees you sole use of the house. The villa can take a maximum of eight guests in all, with extra guests charged by the villa.
Meals are cooked by the villa's own cook, and the staff serve them in the open-plan pavilion or out on the lawn overlooking the bay. Let the villa know your tastes and any dietary needs before you arrive so the cook can plan the menus.
Bawa stripped the house back to its simplest form so that the view does the work. The living and dining areas are in the open pavilion at the front, which faces a huge lawn; the infinity pool looks straight out over Weligama Bay; and steps lead down from the garden to a private beach for swimming. The tropical garden makes a natural spot for yoga and meditation, and laundry is part of the service. Through the villa you can arrange a sunset cruise, a whale-watching trip from Mirissa, surf lessons and a day safari in Yala National Park.
The villa stands between Mirissa Harbour to the south, where the whale-watching boats leave, and Weligama Bay to the north. Mirissa beach and its cafés are a short drive away, as are the palm-topped Coconut Tree Hill and the little cove known as Secret Beach. Surfers can choose between the beginner waves of Weligama beach and the reef breaks at Midigama.
Red Cliffs is on the south coast, reached from Colombo along the Southern Expressway; from Bandaranaike International Airport, north of the city, allow extra time for the drive around Colombo. The easiest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Red Cliffs, which takes you to the villa gate. The nearest station on the Coast Line is Polwathumodara, about 1.2 kilometres away in a straight line, with Mirissa station about 2.3 kilometres away.
It suits families and groups of friends who want a private house rather than a hotel, admirers of Bawa's architecture, and anyone who values space, privacy and a clifftop view over luxury trimmings. For more choice along the coast see our places to stay in Mirissa.
