Charlotte Brontë's novel follows an orphaned girl from a cold household and a harsh charity school to her post as governess at Thornfield Hall, where her employer, Mr Rochester, and the secret the house keeps change the course of her life. It is told in the first person throughout, and much of its force comes from Jane herself — plain, poor, stubborn about her own worth, and unwilling to accept affection on terms that diminish her.
This is the English text, issued by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo as part of their Timeless Classics series, which brings out well-known works of fiction from several periods and genres in editions intended for general readers and students in Sri Lanka.
It suits a reader coming to the book for the first time, a school or university student who needs a copy of their own, or anyone rebuilding a shelf of nineteenth-century English fiction. Gunasena is a long-established Colombo publisher and bookseller working in Sinhala and English, and the series is produced for everyday reading rather than for display.
