About this experience
Your private chauffeur guide collects you from your Galle hotel at 07:00 and heads south along the coast to Wewurukannala Raja Maha Viharaya, near Dikwella. Stand before Sri Lanka's largest seated Buddha — a 160-ft statue dating to the late 18th century — then step into the Tunnel of Hell, where life-sized figures of demons and sinners bring ancient teachings vividly to life. Hundreds of comic-strip murals lining the temple walls trace the Buddha's path to enlightenment panel by panel.
The full day runs for 11 hours, with the route continuing to secluded coastlines away from the main tourist trail. You travel throughout in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, with an English-speaking chauffeur guide and a litre of bottled water per person included. Entrance fees and meals are not included, so bring local rupees for temple admissions and lunch along the way. Minimum age is 5.
