This page explains how Vrishabha (Taurus) and Dhanu (Sagittarius) are read in Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham. The rashi here is the moon sign (chandra rashi) in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka, not the sun sign found in newspaper horoscopes. Rashi results are only a starting point, because the two birth stars shape the real match.
What do the rashi results show when the bride is Vrishabha and the groom is Dhanu?
With the bride in Vrishabha, Dhanu is the 8th sign counted from hers. In Sinhala porondam the rashi item is partly obtained for this count, while in Tamil porutham the rasi item is not obtained. The rashi lords are Venus for Vrishabha and Jupiter for Dhanu. Their relationship is mixed: one regards the other as neutral, while the other regards it as hostile. Because of this, rashyadhipathi (rasi adhipathi in Tamil) is not obtained. Vashya, which looks at the natural pull between two signs, is also not obtained in both systems. These are only three items from a longer list, and astrologers read them alongside the star-level checks.
What changes when the bride is Dhanu and the groom is Vrishabha?
When the pair is reversed, the count runs from the bride's sign to the groom's, so the count becomes 6. In this direction the rashi item is not obtained in both Sinhala and Tamil methods. The rashi lords are still Jupiter and Venus, with the same mixed neutral-and-hostile relationship, so rashyadhipathi is again not obtained. Vashya is not obtained in either system. This shows why direction matters in marriage matching. Swapping the bride's and groom's signs can change a result, as it does here for the Sinhala rashi item, which moves from partly obtained to not obtained.
Why do the birth stars matter more than the rashis?
Each rashi covers nine star quarters (padas) across three nakshatras. That gives every pairing 81 possible star-quarter combinations, and their outcomes vary widely.
With the bride in Vrishabha, 100% of combinations pass Sinhala porondam when the weekday factor is set aside. However, 85% fall in the weaker range of the Tamil porutham count. With the bride in Dhanu, 64% pass the Sinhala check and 65% are weaker in the Tamil count. In both directions about 4% show a Tamil rajju clash, and none reach 8 of 10 porutham. The two traditions weigh their items differently, so the same couple can read quite differently in each.
How should families use these results?
Treat the rashi results on this page as background, not as a verdict. A couple's actual porondam depends on each person's exact nakshatra and pada. These are worked out from the date, time and place of birth.
The calculator gives a much clearer picture when you enter full birth details for both people. It shows each item as obtained, partly obtained or not obtained, so you can see where a match is strong and where it is lighter.
For a marriage decision, many Sri Lankan families also consult a trusted family astrologer. An astrologer can read the full horoscopes together and take the wider chart into account, beyond porondam alone.
