Question 1

What is Tephrosia tinctoria used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, Tephrosia tinctoria has traditionally been used to address skin conditions, liver-related complaints, and inflammatory ailments. Different parts of the plant — roots, leaves, and seeds — may be incorporated into various preparations. Its use is documented in the island's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalog.

Question 2

Where does Tephrosia tinctoria grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found mainly in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, growing in open scrublands, roadsides, and fallow land at lower elevations. It tolerates poor and sandy soils, making it common in rural and coastal areas. It is not typically found in dense rainforest habitats.

Question 3

What family does Tephrosia tinctoria belong to?

Accepted Answer

Tephrosia tinctoria belongs to the family Fabaceae, the legume family. It is a small shrubby herb with pinnate leaves and pea-like flowers, and like other legumes it can fix nitrogen from the atmosphere through its root system.

Question 4

Is Tephrosia tinctoria endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Tephrosia tinctoria is not endemic to Sri Lanka — the genus Tephrosia is widespread across tropical and subtropical regions globally. However, the species is naturalised across parts of South and Southeast Asia and is well integrated into Sri Lanka's traditional medicinal plant heritage.

Question 5

Are there any safety concerns with Tephrosia tinctoria?

Accepted Answer

The genus Tephrosia contains rotenoids and related compounds that can be toxic in high concentrations. Ayurvedic preparation methods are designed to manage these effects, but the plant should only be used under guidance from a qualified practitioner. Self-administration is not recommended.

Question 6

How is Tephrosia tinctoria different from other Tephrosia species in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Several Tephrosia species are found in Sri Lanka, and their traditional uses can overlap. Tephrosia tinctoria is specifically catalogued in the Sri Lankan Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia and is distinguished by its botanical characteristics and documented medicinal applications. Precise identification by a botanist or trained practitioner is important before any medicinal use.

Question 7

Can I see Tephrosia tinctoria growing in the wild during a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the plant can be encountered in its natural habitat in the dry and intermediate zones, particularly in open scrub areas and rural roadsides. Visitors interested in Sri Lanka's medicinal plant heritage may also find curated collections at Ayurvedic gardens and some botanical institutions around the island.
