Sangupiddy Bridge is an important road bridge in northern Sri Lanka that connects the Jaffna Peninsula to the mainland. It spans across the Jaffna Lagoon, linking Sangupiddy on the Jaffna side with Kerativu on the mainland near Pooneryn. This bridge provides an alternative route to the A9 Highway, significantly reducing travel time between Jaffna and Colombo. Before its construction, travelers had to rely solely on the A9 road or ferry services, making the journey longer and less convenient.
The bridge is approximately 288 meters long and 7.35 meters wide, constructed using pre-stressed concrete and steel. It was built as part of Sri Lanka’s post-war infrastructure development efforts, aimed at improving connectivity in the Northern Province. Financial assistance for the construction came from the Government of China, highlighting international cooperation in the country’s rebuilding process.
Since its opening in January 2011, the Sangupiddy Bridge has played a crucial role in boosting economic and social ties between Jaffna and the rest of Sri Lanka. By shortening the travel distance by nearly 110 kilometers, it has facilitated trade, tourism, and daily commuting, making life easier for residents and businesses alike. The bridge stands as a symbol of progress, helping to reintegrate the northern regions with the rest of the country after years of conflict.
