Question 1

What is Plectranthus barbatus used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Plectranthus barbatus is used primarily to support digestive, respiratory, and cardiovascular health. Its roots and leaves are prepared as decoctions, juices, or powders to address conditions such as asthma, indigestion, and heart complaints. Traditional practitioners consider it a warming herb suited to conditions involving cold or sluggish energy.

Question 2

Is Plectranthus barbatus the same as Coleus forskohlii?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Plectranthus barbatus is the currently accepted botanical name for the plant long known as Coleus forskohlii. Both names refer to the same species, a perennial herb in the mint family prized for its pharmacologically active root compound, forskolin. The name Plectranthus barbatus is now standard in scientific and Ayurvedic literature.

Question 3

Where does Plectranthus barbatus grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, favouring rocky, well-drained hillsides and forest margins at low to mid elevations. It is also widely cultivated in home gardens and Ayurvedic herb plots across the island. It tolerates dry conditions well and does not require intensive cultivation.

Question 4

What is forskolin and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

Forskolin is a diterpene compound isolated from the roots of Plectranthus barbatus. It works by activating the enzyme adenylyl cyclase, which raises levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP) in cells, influencing a broad range of physiological functions. This mechanism has attracted scientific study into the plant's potential roles in managing glaucoma, cardiovascular conditions, and metabolic health.

Question 5

Is it safe to use Plectranthus barbatus without a doctor?

Accepted Answer

Because the plant contains potent pharmacologically active compounds, particularly in the root, it is strongly advisable to consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician or medical doctor before use. Self-dosing is not recommended, especially for individuals on medication or with chronic health conditions. Quality and preparation method also significantly affect safety and efficacy.

Question 6

Can Plectranthus barbatus be grown at home in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is commonly grown in Sri Lankan home gardens and propagates easily from stem cuttings. The plant prefers a sunny position with well-drained soil and can tolerate dry spells once established. It is a popular choice for households that maintain a small kitchen or Ayurvedic herb garden.

Question 7

How does Plectranthus barbatus relate to other Sri Lankan Ayurvedic plants?

Accepted Answer

It is one of several hundred plants documented in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopeia. It is often used alongside other botanicals in compound formulations, complementing herbs such as Acacia chundra, Pongamia pinnata, and various aromatic species.
