Question 1

What is Pisum sativum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Pisum sativum is used primarily as a nutritive food-medicine. It is valued for its strengthening properties, mild diuretic action, and role in supporting urinary health. It is generally recommended as part of a balanced diet rather than as a standalone pharmaceutical remedy.

Question 2

Is Pisum sativum native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, the garden pea is not native to Sri Lanka. It is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean and Middle East region and was introduced to South Asia, including Sri Lanka, through historical trade and agricultural exchange. It is now cultivated in the cooler hill-country regions of the island.

Question 3

What is the Sinhala name for the garden pea?

Accepted Answer

The garden pea is commonly called 'Peas' (පීස්) in everyday Sri Lankan usage, with the English term widely adopted. It does not have a classical indigenous Sinhala botanical name, as it is an introduced rather than a native plant.

Question 4

Are peas recommended in Ayurveda for all body types?

Accepted Answer

Ayurvedic texts note that peas, like most legumes, can be gas-forming and are generally advised in moderation for individuals with a dominant Vata constitution. For Pitta and Kapha types, moderate consumption is typically considered appropriate. A qualified Ayurvedic physician can provide guidance tailored to individual constitution.

Question 5

Where are garden peas grown in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Garden peas are cultivated mainly in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, particularly in higher-elevation districts such as Nuwara Eliya where cooler temperatures favour the crop. Production is mostly small-scale and supplies local markets.

Question 6

What nutritional benefits does Pisum sativum offer?

Accepted Answer

Garden peas are a source of plant-based protein, dietary fibre, vitamins C and K, and several B vitamins. They also contain antioxidant compounds including flavonoids and carotenoids. These properties align broadly with the nutritive and strengthening role Ayurvedic tradition assigns to the plant.

Question 7

How does Pisum sativum compare to other plants in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Pisum sativum occupies a supportive, largely dietary role within Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Plants such as Acacia chundra, Pongamia pinnata, and Syzygium aromaticum carry more complex therapeutic profiles and feature more prominently in classical medicinal formulations. The pea's main strength lies in its nutritional safety and accessibility.
