Question 2

Question 3

Where does Pedalium murex grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is generally found in the dry-zone coastal areas of Sri Lanka, favouring sandy, well-drained soils. It is more common in the Northern and North-Western provinces than in the wetter southern and central regions of the island.

Question 5

What does scientific research say about Pedalium murex?

Accepted Answer

Pharmacological studies have identified flavonoids, saponins, and alkaloids in the plant, and laboratory research has reported diuretic and antimicrobial activity. However, large-scale clinical trials in humans are limited, so its traditional uses remain only partially validated by modern science.

Question 6

Is Pedalium murex safe to use without medical supervision?

Accepted Answer

Traditional Ayurvedic use of Pedalium murex is always conducted under the supervision of a qualified practitioner who determines appropriate preparation and dosage. Accepted Answer

The National Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, near Kandy, maintains a well-labelled living collection of Sri Lankan medicinal plants and is accessible on a day visit.
