Question 1

How far is Mattala Airport from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is approximately 235 km from central Colombo. Using the Southern Expressway, the transfer typically takes between 3 and 3.5 hours under normal conditions, making it one of the longer airport-to-city journeys in Sri Lanka.

Question 2

Is there a bus from Mattala Airport to Hambantota?

Accepted Answer

No direct public bus service operates from the Mattala terminal to Hambantota town. The nearest public transport connections are on the main A2 highway, some distance from the terminal. Pre-arranged private transfers or airport taxis are the practical options for most travellers.

Question 3

How much does a taxi from Mattala Airport cost?

Accepted Answer

Fares depend on your destination and whether you use a metered taxi or negotiate a fixed price. Agree on the fare before departing to avoid misunderstandings. Pre-arranged transfers booked through a licensed operator typically offer a fixed, inclusive price and greater predictability.

Question 4

How do I get from Mattala Airport to Yala National Park?

Accepted Answer

Yala National Park's main entrance is roughly 50 to 60 km from Mattala Airport via Tissamaharama, making it one of the closest major wildlife destinations to the airport. The drive typically takes around an hour to 75 minutes. A private transfer is the most convenient option, particularly if you have an early-morning safari slot.

Question 5

Can I get from Mattala Airport to Ella by car?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Ella is around 90 km from Mattala and typically takes 2 to 2.5 hours by road via the A2 and A23 highways. The route rises into the hill country and becomes more winding above Wellawaya, so allow extra time if you are combining the transfer with stops.

Question 6

Is Mattala Airport the same as Colombo Airport?

Accepted Answer

No. Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (IATA code HRI) is a separate facility located in Hambantota District, approximately 235 km south-east of Colombo. Bandaranaike International Airport (IATA code CMB), often called Colombo Airport, is in Katunayake, near Negombo in the north-west of the island. Always double-check which airport your flight uses when booking transfers.

Question 7

What is the best way to arrange a transfer from Mattala Airport in advance?

Accepted Answer

Booking a private transfer through your hotel or a licensed destination management company is the safest approach. This ensures a driver meets you at arrivals, removes the need to negotiate fares after a long flight, and allows you to factor in any en-route stops. Confirm the driver's contact details and share your flight number before travel.

Question 8

How long does it take to get from Mattala Airport to Udawalawe?

Accepted Answer

Udawalawe is around 65 km from the airport and the drive typically takes 75 to 90 minutes via the B408 and A18 roads. This route passes through agricultural land and small towns, so travel times can vary. If you have a morning safari at Udawalawe, try to complete the transfer the previous evening.
