Question 1

How far is Kantale Railway Station from Colombo Fort?

Accepted Answer

Kantale Station is 256.4 km from Colombo Fort measured along the Trincomalee Line. By rail, the journey typically takes between five and seven hours depending on the service. The route passes through Maho Junction and across the dry zone of Sri Lanka's north-central and eastern regions.

Question 2

How many trains stop at Kantale per day?

Accepted Answer

Around six trains call at Kantale on a typical day, running in both directions along the Trincomalee Line. Schedules can vary on public holidays and during monsoon disruptions. Contact the station on 026-2234271 or check Sri Lanka Railways for the current timetable.

Question 3

What is the station nearest to Kantale on the Trincomalee Line?

Accepted Answer

The neighbouring station in the direction of Trincomalee is China Bay. China Bay is close to Trincomalee harbour and serves as a gateway to the broader Trincomalee area, including its beaches and the Koneswaram Temple.

Question 4

Is Kantale worth visiting as a tourist?

Accepted Answer

Kantale itself is a small dry-zone town, but its ancient irrigation reservoir — Kantale Tank — is a draw for birdwatchers and those interested in Sri Lanka's hydraulic civilisation. It also serves as a convenient base or stop-off for travellers heading to Trincomalee, Medirigiriya, or the Habarana area.

Question 5

Can I kayak on Kantale Tank?

Accepted Answer

Yes, kayaking is available on Kantale Tank through local operators. The reservoir's calm waters and relatively undisturbed shores make it a pleasant paddling environment, particularly in the early morning when birdlife is most active.

Question 6

What is the best way to travel from Kantale to Trincomalee?

Accepted Answer

The easiest options are to continue by train to China Bay and then Trincomalee, or to take a bus or taxi along the A11 road. By rail the distance is short, and the journey adds only a modest amount of time to the overall trip from Colombo.

Question 7

Is the Trincomalee Line railway journey scenic?

Accepted Answer

The route has a quieter, drier beauty compared to the famous hill-country line. It passes ancient irrigation tanks, scrub jungle, and paddy fields typical of the Eastern Province dry zone. It is rarely crowded with tourists, which gives it a more local character than the highland routes.
