Question 1

What is Jatropha glandulifera used for in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

Jatropha glandulifera is catalogued among Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants, where members of the Jatropha genus have traditionally been associated with applications related to skin conditions, wound treatment, and digestive health. Specific uses are typically determined by trained traditional physicians based on classical ayurvedic texts and regional practice. Preparations from this plant group require careful handling by experienced practitioners due to the presence of latex compounds.

Question 2

Is Jatropha glandulifera native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Jatropha glandulifera is documented within Sri Lanka's native and naturalised flora and is included in the country's formal ayurvedic plant catalogue. The genus Jatropha has a broad distribution across tropical and subtropical regions, and several species are found across South and Southeast Asia. In Sri Lanka, this species is typically associated with dry zone and transitional zone habitats.

Question 3

Which family does Jatropha glandulifera belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, one of the largest families of flowering plants, which includes a wide variety of economically and medicinally significant species. Many members of this family produce latex or milky sap, which often contains bioactive compounds relevant to both medicine and toxicology.

Question 4

Where can Jatropha glandulifera be found growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is generally found in lowland and mid-elevation areas of Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climatic zones. It tends to grow in open habitats such as forest margins, roadsides, agricultural borders, and secondary scrubland rather than in dense rainforest environments.

Question 5

Is Jatropha glandulifera safe to use without medical supervision?

Accepted Answer

Like many plants in the Euphorbiaceae family, Jatropha species can contain potent latex compounds that may cause irritation or adverse effects if used improperly. Traditional use is guided by experienced ayurvedic practitioners who understand appropriate preparation methods. Use outside of supervised medical practice is not recommended.

Question 6

How is ayurvedic plant medicine regulated in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ayurveda in Sri Lanka is formally regulated by the Department of Ayurveda under the Ministry of Health. Practitioners require recognised qualifications, and herbal preparations must meet standards set out in the national ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Government-run ayurvedic hospitals and clinics operate across the island alongside private practitioners.

Question 7

Are there scientific studies on Jatropha plants and their medicinal properties?

Accepted Answer

Research into the phytochemistry of Jatropha species is ongoing at institutions including the University of Colombo's Institute of Indigenous Medicine. Laboratory studies on compounds isolated from related Jatropha species have reported activity against bacteria, fungi, and certain tumour cell lines, though clinical evidence for specific therapeutic applications remains an active area of investigation.
