Question 1

What is Ixora pavetta used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In the Sri Lankan ayurvedic tradition, Ixora pavetta's bark, roots, and leaves have been used in preparations associated with inflammation, fever, and skin conditions. It typically appears in compound formulations rather than as a single-herb remedy. Its inclusion in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants reflects centuries of documented use.

Question 2

Is Ixora pavetta the same as Ixora coccinea?

Accepted Answer

No, they are distinct species within the same genus. Ixora coccinea is the widely cultivated ornamental shrub with bright red or orange flowers commonly seen in Sri Lankan gardens. Ixora pavetta grows more naturally in dry-zone forests and is valued primarily for its medicinal properties rather than its appearance.

Question 3

Where can I find Ixora pavetta growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ixora pavetta is found in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, typically in forest margins, open woodland, and scrubland with well-drained soils. It occurs in and around protected areas such as Wilpattu National Park and in the broader Cultural Triangle region. It is less common in the wet-zone highlands.

Question 4

Is Ixora pavetta an endemic species in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ixora pavetta is native to Sri Lanka and parts of South and Southeast Asia, so it is not strictly endemic to the island. However, its role in Sri Lankan traditional medicine is well documented locally, and its populations are an important part of the dry-zone plant community. Sri Lanka's protected-area network provides some habitat security for wild populations.

Question 5

What family does Ixora pavetta belong to?

Accepted Answer

Ixora pavetta belongs to the family Rubiaceae, one of the largest flowering plant families in the world. This family also includes coffee, gardenias, and quinine-yielding Cinchona. Within Rubiaceae, the genus Ixora alone contains several hundred species distributed across tropical regions.

Question 6

Can I buy products made from Ixora pavetta in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Formulated ayurvedic products incorporating Ixora pavetta are found primarily through specialised ayurvedic pharmacies and wellness centres in Sri Lanka. The plant is generally used in compound preparations rather than sold as a standalone herbal product. For related wildcrafted Ixora products, some specialist suppliers offer dehydrated flower preparations from related species.

Question 7

Is there scientific research on Ixora pavetta's medicinal properties?

Accepted Answer

A growing body of phytochemical research has examined various Ixora species for bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, and triterpenes associated with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. Research specifically on Ixora pavetta is less extensive than on the more widely studied Ixora coccinea, but interest in the genus from natural-product researchers is increasing.
