Is the Common Birdwing really Sri Lanka's national butterfly?

Yes, Troides darsius is officially recognised as Sri Lanka's national butterfly. It was designated partly because it is endemic to the island and partly because of its remarkable size and appearance, which make it one of the country's most distinctive wildlife symbols.

How big is the Common Birdwing butterfly?

The wingspan ranges from around 140 mm to 190 mm, making it the largest butterfly species in Sri Lanka. Females are generally larger than males, though males are more colourful, with brighter yellow hindwings.

Where is the best place in Sri Lanka to see Troides darsius?

Sinharaja Forest Reserve is consistently cited as one of the top locations, along with Kitulgala and the Knuckles foothills. Early morning guided walks along forest trails near Aristolochia host plants offer the highest chance of a sighting.

Why is the Common Birdwing poisonous?

Both caterpillars and adults accumulate toxic alkaloids from Aristolochia (Dutchman's Pipe) plants, which are the sole larval food source. These compounds make the butterfly unpalatable to most predators, and the red markings on its body act as a visual warning signal.

Can I see the Common Birdwing in a garden?

Yes, the species does visit well-planted home gardens in the wet zone, particularly where Lantana, Ixora, or Hibiscus are in flower. Gardens that also contain Aristolochia climbing plants may even attract females looking to lay eggs.

Is it legal to catch or collect Common Birdwing butterflies in Sri Lanka?

No. Troides darsius is protected under Sri Lanka's Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance, which prohibits collection, possession, and trade of the species. Violations can result in significant legal penalties.

What is the difference between male and female Common Birdwings?

Males have fine white streaks on black forewings and vivid golden-yellow hindwings with narrow black borders. Females are larger, with broader black markings and less intense yellow coloration, giving them a more muted overall appearance.

What plants attract the Common Birdwing to a garden?

Nectar plants such as Lantana, Ixora, and Hibiscus draw adult butterflies in to feed. Including Aristolochia (Dutchman's Pipe) as a climbing plant is essential if you want to encourage breeding, as it is the only food source for the caterpillars.
