Question 1

What is Citrus limon used for in Ayurvedic medicine in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, lemon juice, rind, seeds, and leaves are each applied therapeutically. Common uses include digestive support, relief from nausea and bloating, respiratory aid, and topical treatments for skin irritation. The fruit is often combined with ginger, honey, or rock salt in simple home remedies.

Question 2

Is Citrus limon the same as a regular lemon?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Citrus limon is the scientific name for the common lemon. It belongs to the Rutaceae family and is the same species grown in kitchen gardens and commercial orchards worldwide. In Sri Lanka it is cultivated primarily in home gardens and on smallholder farms.

Question 3

Which part of the lemon plant is most used in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

The juice is the most commonly used part in everyday Ayurvedic practice, but the rind, seeds, and leaves each have distinct applications. The peel's essential oil is valued for its carminative and antimicrobial properties, while the seeds are traditionally used in formulations targeting intestinal health.

Question 4

Does lemon grow well in Sri Lanka's climate?

Accepted Answer

Lemon trees adapt well to Sri Lanka's tropical climate across a range of altitudes, from coastal lowlands to mid-country elevations. They prefer well-drained, slightly acidic soils with consistent sunlight. Home gardens throughout the wet and intermediate zones commonly include at least one lemon tree.

Question 5

What traditional Sri Lankan food is made with lemon?

Accepted Answer

Lemon features in a number of Sri Lankan culinary traditions, most notably Lunu Dehi — a salted, preserved lemon pickle served as a condiment with rice and curry. Fresh lemon juice is also widely used as a seasoning in seafood dishes, rice preparations, and cooling drinks.

Question 6

How does lemon interact with other Ayurvedic herbs used in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Lemon is commonly combined with spices such as black pepper, cloves, and ginger in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic formulations. This synergistic approach aims to enhance the efficacy of each ingredient. The combination with black pepper and honey, for example, is a widely used traditional remedy for colds and sore throats.

Question 7

Can tourists visit Ayurvedic gardens in Sri Lanka where lemon is grown?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several Ayurvedic demonstration gardens and spice farms — particularly around Kandy and Gampaha — allow guided visits where medicinal plants including lemon are explained in context. Wellness retreats across the island also incorporate plant-based tours as part of Ayurvedic programmes.
