Question 1

What is Calamus zeylanicus?

Accepted Answer

Calamus zeylanicus is a species of rattan palm native to Sri Lanka. It is a climbing plant belonging to the family Arecaceae, characterised by long, spiny stems that scale forest vegetation. It is catalogued among Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Where does Calamus zeylanicus grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is associated with humid lowland and mid-elevation forests in Sri Lanka's wet zone, particularly in the Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Protected areas such as Sinharaja Forest Reserve provide suitable closed-canopy habitat for this and other endemic forest plants.

Question 3

What is Calamus zeylanicus used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Members of the Calamus genus have been used in South Asian herbal traditions for a range of applications, including anti-inflammatory and analgesic formulations. In Sri Lanka, rattan species are referenced in traditional Ayurvedic practice, often used alongside other native medicinal plants in compound preparations.

Question 4

Is Calamus zeylanicus endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Calamus zeylanicus is considered native to Sri Lanka and is closely associated with the island's endemic-rich forest flora. The species name 'zeylanicus' itself derives from the Latin name for Ceylon (Sri Lanka), indicating its connection to the island.

Question 5

What is a rattan palm and how is it different from other palms?

Accepted Answer

Rattans are climbing palms rather than free-standing trees. They use hook-like spines along their stems and leaf extensions to grip surrounding vegetation and climb toward the forest canopy. This distinguishes them from upright palms such as the coconut or kitul palm found in Sri Lanka.

Question 6

Is Calamus zeylanicus threatened with extinction?

Accepted Answer

Like many endemic forest plants in Sri Lanka, Calamus zeylanicus faces pressure from ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation in the wet zone. Conservation depends on the protection of remaining closed-canopy forests and sustainable management of wild plant populations.

Question 7

Can rattan from Calamus zeylanicus be used in craftwork?

Accepted Answer

Rattan stems from the Calamus genus are widely used across tropical Asia for weaving, basketry, and furniture-making once dried and processed. While Calamus zeylanicus is primarily documented as a medicinal plant, its cane shares the structural properties that make other rattans valuable craft materials.
