Question 1

Where is Alpitiya in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Alpitiya is a small rural locality in the Gampaha District of Sri Lanka's Western Province, carrying the administrative code LK94008319. It lies within the low-country wet zone, characterised by paddy fields, coconut groves, and village tank reservoirs.

Question 2

How far is Alpitiya from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

The Gampaha District, where Alpitiya is situated, is generally within an hour's drive of central Colombo under normal traffic conditions. Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake is even closer, as it also falls within the Gampaha District.

Question 3

What can you see or do near Alpitiya?

Accepted Answer

The area is primarily of interest for its rural Sri Lankan village character — paddy farming, coconut smallholdings, Buddhist temples, and village tank ecosystems. Negombo, the Madu Ganga wetlands, and the coast are all within an hour or two by road.

Question 4

Is there accommodation in Alpitiya?

Accepted Answer

There are no internationally listed hotels or guesthouses in Alpitiya itself. Visitors typically base themselves in Negombo or Colombo and visit the area on a day excursion.

Question 5

What is the best time to visit the Gampaha District?

Accepted Answer

December through March is generally the driest and most comfortable period. The south-west monsoon (May to September) brings significant rainfall, and low-lying rural roads can flood. April's Sinhala New Year period is culturally lively but some services may be reduced.

Question 6

How do I reach Alpitiya by public transport?

Accepted Answer

The Northern Railway Line connects Colombo Fort to Gampaha town, from where local buses and three-wheelers serve surrounding villages. A private transfer from Colombo or the airport is often more convenient for reaching smaller localities like Alpitiya directly.

Question 7

What province does Alpitiya belong to?

Accepted Answer

Alpitiya falls within the Western Province of Sri Lanka, specifically the Gampaha District. The Western Province is the country's most populous province and includes Colombo, the commercial capital.
