Question 1

What family does Agrostistachys hookeri belong to?

Accepted Answer

Agrostistachys hookeri belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, a large and ecologically important family of flowering plants. Many Euphorbiaceae species contain bioactive secondary metabolites, which explains their recurring presence in traditional medicine systems across tropical Asia.

Question 2

Is Agrostistachys hookeri endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The genus Agrostistachys is restricted to tropical Asia, and Agrostistachys hookeri is recorded specifically from Sri Lanka's wet-zone forests. While closely related species occur in neighbouring regions, this particular species is strongly associated with Sri Lanka's lowland and submontane rainforest habitats.

Question 3

What part of the plant is used in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

Detailed ethnobotanical records for Agrostistachys hookeri are limited in widely available literature. Traditional practitioners typically work with the bark, leaves, or roots of Euphorbiaceae plants, though specific documented uses for this species require further scientific study to confirm.

Question 4

Where can I see Sri Lankan medicinal plants in their natural habitat?

Accepted Answer

Sinharaja Forest Reserve in the south-west wet zone is the best place to encounter Sri Lanka's rarest forest plants in their natural setting. Guided forest walks led by trained naturalists are available through eco-lodges and conservation organisations in the area.

Question 5

Who was Agrostistachys hookeri named after?

Accepted Answer

The species epithet hookeri honours Sir William Jackson Hooker, the British botanist and director of Kew Gardens who played a major role in cataloguing tropical flora during the 19th century. Many Sri Lankan plant species were formally described and named during this period of intensive colonial botanical survey.

Question 6

How many medicinal plants are recorded in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's official catalogues and traditional pharmacopoeias document hundreds of native plant species with recognised medicinal applications. The island's high rate of endemism — around one-third of its roughly 3,000 flowering plant species are found nowhere else — makes it a particularly valuable repository of botanical diversity.

Question 7

Is Agrostistachys hookeri a threatened species?

Accepted Answer

Like many wet-zone forest understorey plants in Sri Lanka, Agrostistachys hookeri faces indirect threats from habitat loss and forest degradation. It is not commonly cultivated, so its long-term survival is tied to the health of the remaining natural forests in the island's south-west wet zone.
