▶️A Basilica Built from a Promise

The origins of the Basilica date back to a small chapel built in 1911 and a grotto added in 1917. During the Second World War, Archbishop Jean-Marie Masson vowed to build a national shrine if Sri Lanka remained unharmed by the war. Although he did not live to see its completion, his successor Cardinal Thomas Cooray fulfilled that promise, and the Basilica became a national place of worship.

▶️A Unique Blend of Christian and Asian Architecture

Designed by Father Harris, the Basilica beautifully combines Christian symbolism with elements of traditional Indian temple architecture. Twin towers represent the Love of God and Love of Neighbor, while the impressive façade features six granite pillars symbolizing the six dioceses of Sri Lanka at the time. Bronze sculptures and reliefs depicting the history of Christianity in Sri Lanka decorate the exterior.

▶️The Shrine of Our Lady of Lanka

At the heart of the Basilica stands the revered statue of Our Lady of Lanka, inspired by Our Lady of Fatima but uniquely depicted holding the Infant Jesus. The sanctuary also houses a magnificent granite altar, the Holy of Holies, and the beautifully designed Blessed Sacrament Chapel, where pilgrims gather for prayer and Eucharistic adoration throughout the year.

▶️Beautiful Gardens, Grotto and Heritage Museum

The Basilica's tranquil grounds are home to lush gardens planted by Cardinal Cooray, scenic pathways, a peaceful lake fed by a natural spring, and the magnificent Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto. Visitors can also explore the Museum and Heritage Centre, which preserves historic Catholic artifacts, including the chair used by the Pope during his visit to Sri Lanka.
