Siam View Hotel, Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka

Siam View Hotel was originally run by a co-operative of friends from different continents who came here in the 1980s in search of peace and tranquillity on the desolate beaches of Arugam Bay. Subsequently, the hotel was badly damaged by the devastating Boxing Day tsunami of 2004, destroying most of its original rooms and buildings. Recovery has been difficult, but the spirit shines bright under the vision of one of its original owners, Fred and his Thai fiance who now run it now as a Thai restaurant and guest house with just four a/c rooms. Siam View is a landmark in this small town of Arugam Bay with its Thai-style timber roof and an old English, red telephone booth in front of the property. The Thai food here is authentic and the restaurant comes alive each night with music and bright lights. Fred's own home-brewed beer is served on tap and surf movies are featured on a large screen.
Siam View Hotel Location

Siam View, situated on the beach close to one of the popular surf points in Arugam Bay, is one of the original guest houses in this small and out-of-the-way beach village. Arugam Bay lies in the remote south-east, close to Pottuvil - an area which offers high-class surfing (the best on the island), deserted beaches, an astonishing range of flora and birdlife in the wetlands and jungles nearby in the Lahugala national park. To get here, keen surfers usually make the eight hour long journey on the A4 route directly from Colombo to Arugam Bay, which is tiring but well worth the trip. Since Arugam Bay is easily accessible from other parts of the country including the southern highlands (Badulla, Ella, Haputale), central hills (Kandy), Buttala foothills (Uda Walawe, Yala, Tissa) and the South Coast, it can be easily included into a tour of Sri Lanka.
