Hidden away amid the lush dense greenery of Habarana, a place where nature abounds and can still be found in its pristine condition lies a little known lodge quaintly called "The Other Corner".
Situated along the Anuradhapura - Trincomalee/ Polonnaruwa road in the Anuradhapura district, a veritable paradise amid a paradise as a recent visitor termed it, an apt description as many a well known ornithologist and a myriad of botanists are sure to call it after spending a few days in this tranquil setting.
The Other Corner Location
From the heart of Colombo, around 172 kilometers away (3 1/2 hours drive) lies the idealistic "The Other Corner". Situated within the cultural triangle, an area rife with paddy fields and natural beauty, of thatched roofs and friendly natives, where wild life abounds and the appeal of the wild will leave you breathless.
The road leading there for the most part is straight and well paved providing a peaceful and enjoyable journey. The panoramic view as the bustle of the big city is left behind and a world of natural beauty and untainted forests, with marsh land dotting the area is breathtaking. The concrete buildings giving way to small huts with thatched roofs and close, friendly communities, is a welcome change for anyone trying to escape the stress of a urban life.
The Other Corner Accommodation
The Lodge
Built above ground level, so as to reduce the impact of encroaching on natural trails that the elephants take during the dry period, and also providing a view of these magnificent beasts as the walk underneath, the lodge is given a natural look of clay and wood. With its plank stairway and wood furniture being the first things that a visitor would notice, the lodge will make sure that guests would enjoy the best of camping in comfortable and convenient surroundings. The two family rooms available in the lodge consist of 5 beds and attached bathrooms in a spacious surrounding, well ventilated and lit, and is ideal to accommodate 4 to a maximum of 8 visitors. For relaxation the lounge area hosts a comfortable sofa set along with a couple of deck chairs and benches and a refreshing view of the surrounding country side.
The Writers Rest
The writers rest is an altogether delightful abode for those seeking inspiration and solitude to pursue their literary ambitions. With an invigorating view of nature, the writers rest is particularly pleasant for those seeking privacy. A single room with an attached bathroom, the writer rest is furnished with all that a writer would need to work in perfect solitude and peace.
The Outhouse
Situated the furthest away from the main lodge, the outhouse can comfortably facilitate 2 visitors. Open to what could be termed a natural garden, overshadowed by trees of many varieties; the outhouse is a picturesque abode and a delight to wake up to in the mornings. A natural path leads from the abode to the stream, which can be followed along the stream bed to the bund, providing an exciting experience as well as an invigorating view of the water life that teem in these small streams. Friendly native fisherman may also be seen, who are ever ready to explain how they make their rods and tackle.
The High Hide
Built with the idea of a tree house in mind, the High Hide is a split level observatory atop a tree. ""The High Hide" provides an ideal observation point for ornithologists and naturalists, with an unrestricted view of the surrounding area, to observe without interference the abundance of nature. With its clay covered plank flooring the High Hide provides a cool and exciting place of observation while waiting for nature to show its wonders.
