People and Wildlife
Sri Lanka's long history of wildlife protection and sustainable use of forest that tun to 246 BC was shattered by the British colonial rule during the period of 1815-1948. The colonialists were hell bent on exploiting the forest, destroying the wooded hills for commercial cultivation and engage in game hunting of mammals and birds and slaughtering thousands of elephants. Today Sri Lanka has 13% of its area reserved for the National Wildlife Reserve parks.
