▶️The Legacy of Leway Dissava

Danagirigala Raja Maha Viharaya is closely associated with the legendary Leway Dissava, one of Sri Lanka’s national heroes. In 1785, following the orders of King Sri Rajadhi Rajasingha, Leway Dissava supervised the renovation of the temple. According to local folklore, he personally carried granite stones from the Maha Oya River to construct the impressive staircase leading to the summit.

At the summit, visitors are welcomed by a sacred Bo Tree, an ancient Bodhigara, and a remarkable rock cave temple. The cave features Brahmi inscriptions, traditional drip ledges, and a Sri Pathula—a symbolic footprint of the Buddha. Evidence of an early monastic settlement can also be found throughout the mountaintop, reflecting the temple’s long religious history.

The temple's image house is often compared to the famous Dambulla Cave Temple because of its impressive collection of Buddhist sculptures and murals. Inside the three-level cave shrine are ten Buddha statues, depicting the Buddha in seated, standing, and reclining (Parinirvana) postures. Beautiful clay-and-lime dragon arches, intricate paintings, and unique Kandyan-era artwork make this one of Sri Lanka’s hidden artistic treasures.
