▶️Horton Plains – A World Above the Clouds

High in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, Horton Plains National Park is a breathtaking landscape of cloud forests, windswept grasslands, misty valleys, and crystal-clear mountain streams. Sitting between approximately 2,100 and 2,400 metres above sea level, the plateau feels completely different from tropical Sri Lanka below—a remote high-altitude wilderness shaped by wind, rain, and cloud.

▶️From Maha Eliya Thenna to Horton Plains

Long before becoming a national park in 1988, this vast plateau was known as Maha Eliya Thenna, meaning the “great open plain.” During British rule, it was renamed after Governor Sir Robert Wilmot Horton and became a popular hunting ground among colonial planters and sportsmen. The legacy of explorer and hunter Sir Samuel Baker also remains through the famous Baker’s Falls.

▶️A UNESCO World Heritage Landscape

In 2010, Horton Plains joined the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary and the Knuckles Mountain Range as part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition celebrates not only the region’s extraordinary scenery but also its globally significant and exceptionally rare montane ecosystems.

▶️An Extraordinary World of Plants

Nearly 750 plant species have been recorded across Horton Plains, with many found nowhere else on Earth. Ancient-looking forests filled with moss, orchids, and lichens suddenly give way to golden grasslands, crimson rhododendrons, clear streams, and dwarf bamboo bent by powerful highland winds.

▶️Hiking Across the Roof of Sri Lanka

Horton Plains offers some of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding hiking experiences. The landscape is also home to Thotupola Kanda and Kirigalpotta, the country’s second and third highest mountains. The Kirigalpotta trail stretches for nearly 15 km, taking hikers through isolated montane wilderness, changing clouds, strong winds, and spectacular highland scenery.

▶️Wildlife Hidden in the Mist

The Sambar Deer is one of the most commonly seen mammals at Horton Plains, often appearing through the early morning fog. But the park also shelters Toque Macaques, Purple-Faced Leaf Monkeys, lizards, the elusive Sri Lankan Leopard, and the exceptionally rare Horton Plains Slender Loris, one of the world’s most endangered primates.

▶️Baker’s Falls – Hidden Within the Forest

Surrounded by thick vegetation, Baker’s Falls is one of the park’s most popular landmarks. At around 20 metres high, the waterfall tumbles through the cool montane forest, with constant spray creating a refreshing stop along the famous Horton Plains hiking trail.

▶️World’s End – An Unforgettable View

The most dramatic attraction is World’s End, where the plateau suddenly drops nearly 870 metres. On a clear morning, the view stretches across distant valleys and tea estates toward Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. But mist can cover the entire escarpment within seconds, making an early-morning visit especially rewarding. Nearby, Little World’s End offers another spectacular viewpoint.

▶️A Fragile Highland Wilderness

Horton Plains is also one of Sri Lanka’s great watersheds, with streams originating in its mist forests eventually feeding three major river systems. Yet this extraordinary environment faces threats from climate change, invasive plants, soil degradation, and forest dieback. Protecting Horton Plains means protecting an ecosystem where forests gather clouds, rivers begin, and some of Sri Lanka’s rarest wildlife survives.
