Sir John's Bungalow

Once a holiday home of Sir John's Kotalawala, a renowned Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Sir John's Kotalawala was built by the British during the Colonial Era. Located ideally in Riverston, Matale, the area which was once a tea planter’s paradise is now a part of the Knuckles Conservation Project allowing the area to regain its natural beauty to become a haven for nature lovers. Offering tastefully appointed rooms and retaining its old world charm, the bungalow is a fine holiday retreat to enjoy a beautiful vacation hidden amidst natural wilderness, cosy interiors and savouring delicious food.

Accommodation

Sir John's Kotalawala in Matale consists of 5 accommodation units which are all stylishly appointed with all modern conveniences. All guestrooms feature king sized beds, attached bathrooms with hot water showers and stylish teak floors. 'Gonamade' is a standard double room which opens out to the veranda while 'Laggala' and 'Wasgamuwa' are standard triple rooms that can be expanded to accommodate 4 guests with the help of an extra bed. There are also 2 suites 'Riverston' and 'Sir John's with window seats and four-legged cast iron bathtubs, flat screen televisions with satellite connections and a DVD player.

Facilities

A century old planter's bungalow, Sir John's has managed to keep its old world charms intact with old fireplaces in the dining and living areas. The veranda and the drawing room overlook the beautiful garden which spreads across 5 acres. The property also consists of a natural rock pool which is nourished by a mountain spring allowing guests to take a dip in crystal clear waters. The gardens also consist of tea bushes.

Sir John's bungalow also comprises of a library with fascinating books of old Sri Lanka, a wide selection of enjoyable board games and also an easel, canvas and oil paints for the artist in you. A 14 seater dining table is available in the dining room while guests can also enjoy delicious home cooked meals in a private dining area, the veranda or even the garden by the stream that flows through.

Located in Riverston, Matale, Sir John's Kotalawala boasts of beautiful surroundings from the North Eastern Knuckles Mountain range to beautiful and breathtaking waterfalls and forests with a variety of flora and fauna. The Bungalow is conveniently located between the 28th and 29th kilometre posts along the Matale - Pallegama road. Sir John's Bungalow is also within 2 hours reach from Kandy, Sigiriya and Knuckles. The distance from Colombo is approximately 148km.
