Camellia Hills is a contemporary take on a tea planter’s bungalow on Dunkeld Estate at Dickoya, at the edge of one of Sri Lanka’s finest tea valleys. The Castlereagh Reservoir lies at its feet. The five bedrooms and the living areas all face the views: hillsides of tea and pine forest dotted with century-old factories, waterfalls, colonial churches and colourful Hindu shrines. There is an infinity pool, a lounge with an open fire and a kitchen garden, and dining is all-inclusive with butler service.
The bungalow is about 135 km from Bandaranaike International Airport, around 4.5 hours by road. The last stretch runs through the market town of Hatton, 45 minutes away, where the railway station is 17 km from the bungalow. Kandy is about 80 km away. Guests can also arrive by seaplane, landing on the reservoir. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Camellia Hills.
Each of the five rooms is designed differently, cosily furnished and looking out over the lake or the mountains. The two Lakeview Suites (34 sqm) have four-poster king beds and private sitting areas facing the garden and reservoir. The Lakeview Bedroom has a king bed and views of the water. The Camellia Bedroom has timber floors, a king bed that converts to twins and a veranda facing the Peak Ridge Forest. The Dickoya Suite (52 sqm) is the family suite: a king room with a bathtub, plus an interconnecting room for children. Every room has a fan, tea and coffee, a safe and Wi-Fi.
Meals are relaxed and personal, served on the breezy terrace facing the lake, with sundowners by the fire. The rate covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, soft drinks, beer and house wine, spirits with mixers, and tea or coffee throughout the day. The Sri Lankan and international menu uses produce grown in the bungalow’s own garden. Guests booking in US dollars also receive a USD 50 credit for in-house experiences.
The hotel arranges guided or self-guided tea estate walks, and a canoe ride on the reservoir with local fishermen. It can set up a picnic or sundowners at a secret viewpoint, organise a cookery session with the chef, and arrange a visit to the nineteenth-century Warleigh Church. Night walks and stargazing are also popular. Adam’s Peak is within reach for the pre-dawn pilgrim climb. Intimate weddings of up to 25 guests can be hosted.
