Sinhala Thupawanshaya

සිටRs 1,661.59

The Thupavamsa belongs to the body of Sinhala chronicle literature that also includes the Mahavamsa, the Culavamsa and the Bodhivamsa, and it holds its own place within that group. Its subject is the account of the Ruwanweli dagoba — the closing lines of the text name that account as the matter of the work, and state that it was composed to gladden the hearts of upright people. The chronicle has long been held in regard by Buddhist readers, both for what it records of the past and for its standing as a text in its own right.

This edition is the work of Prof. W.S. Karunathilake and is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. of Colombo, a house with a long record of Sinhala publishing.

The book is written entirely in Sinhala. There is no English text and no parallel translation, so it will be read by those comfortable in the language. For readers outside Sri Lanka, that is worth knowing before ordering.

It will suit students of Sinhala classical literature, readers following the chronicle tradition from the Mahavamsa onward, and anyone building a shelf of the Sinhala vamsa texts in the original language.
