This half-day cycling tour links three of Kandy's most celebrated temples, threaded together by quiet lanes through brilliant green hill-country. Setting off from the University of Peradeniya with an experienced English-speaking guide, you ride at an easy pace on mountain bikes — helmets, water and a couple of chocolate bars provided — soaking up the scenery between each ancient site.
At Gadaladeniya you reach an ancient monastery of strong South Indian influence, its golden Buddha ringed by a main stupa and four satellite stupas. Lankathilaka, the finest edifice of the Gampola era, rises on natural rock with ornamental arches, murals and rock inscriptions. The tour ends at Embekke, almost entirely of wood and covered in over 500 carvings — entwined swans, double-headed eagles and more — before you return to Peradeniya.
