Question 2

Accepted Answer

The neighbouring stations are Kamburugamuwa to the north (towards Colombo) and Matara to the south. Matara is the terminus of the Coast Line, so Walgama is near the end of the route.

Accepted Answer

Take a northbound Coast Line train from Walgama towards Colombo Fort. Services run throughout the day, and journey times range from roughly two and a half hours on faster services to longer on stopping trains. Check the Sri Lanka Railways timetable before you travel as schedules change periodically.

Question 5

Is there anything to do near Walgama Station?

Accepted Answer

Question 6

Can I buy train tickets at Walgama Station on the day of travel?

Accepted Answer

Yes, tickets are generally available at the station window on the day. On quieter services it may also be possible to purchase from the onboard conductor. For busy holiday periods, buying in advance at Matara or a larger station is advisable.

Question 7

Is the Coast Line train journey scenic between Colombo and Matara?

Accepted Answer

The Coast Line is considered one of the more rewarding rail journeys in Sri Lanka, especially south of Aluthgama where the track runs close to the Indian Ocean. For the best sea views, sit on the sea-facing side of the carriage on a southbound service.
