Where is Undugoda in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Undugoda is a small town in the Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka's North Western Province, at approximately 7.6864° N, 80.3539° E. It lies in the island's interior, between the dry-zone plains and the approaches to the hill country. The postal code is 71200.

Question 2

What is near Undugoda worth visiting?

Accepted Answer

Wilpattu National Park is the most significant attraction within driving distance of Undugoda. The Cultural Triangle — including Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa — is also accessible within a few hours by road. The surrounding countryside offers a genuine glimpse of rural Sri Lankan life.

Question 3

How far is Undugoda from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

The drive from Colombo to Undugoda typically takes around two to three hours by private vehicle, depending on the route and traffic. The A10 road via Kurunegala is a common approach. Public transport is possible but involves connections and is slower.

Question 4

Can I get a private transfer to Undugoda from the airport?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lakpura arranges private transfers to and from Undugoda, including direct runs from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Fares are quoted per route at booking. The airport's location north of Colombo makes it relatively convenient for onward travel to this part of the North Western Province.

Question 5

Is Undugoda a good base for Wilpattu National Park?

Accepted Answer

Undugoda is within driving range of Wilpattu, but most travellers choose to stay closer to the park entrance or in nearby Kurunegala, where accommodation options are more available. A day trip from Undugoda to Wilpattu is feasible with a private vehicle and some advance planning.

Question 6

What is the best time of year to visit this region of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The dry season from around May to September generally offers the most reliable road conditions and the best wildlife sightings in Wilpattu. The northeast monsoon (October to January) brings periodic rain but rarely disrupts travel on main roads. Birdwatchers often find the inter-monsoon months particularly rewarding.

Question 7

Does Lakpura offer accommodation in Undugoda?

Accepted Answer

Lakpura does not currently list any accommodation in Undugoda itself. For overnight stays in the North Western Province, nearby options around Kurunegala, Habarana, or close to the Wilpattu park entrance are more practical choices. Our team can help plan accommodation as part of a broader itinerary.
