Question 1

How many trains stop at Sankathanai Railway Station per day?

Accepted Answer

Around seven trains call at Sankathanai on a typical operating day. These include services in both directions — toward Colombo in the south and toward Jaffna and Kankesanthurai in the north. The exact number can vary depending on the day of the week and public holidays.

Question 2

Which train line serves Sankathanai Station?

Accepted Answer

Sankathanai is served by the Northern Line, which runs from Colombo Fort all the way to Kankesanthurai at the northern tip of the island. This line passes through Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, and Jaffna along its route through the Northern Province.

Question 3

How long does the train from Colombo to Jaffna District take?

Accepted Answer

Express services on the Northern Line from Colombo Fort to the Jaffna area typically take between seven and nine hours depending on the specific train and the number of stops. Booking a reserved seat in advance is strongly recommended, particularly around festival periods.

Question 4

Is Jaffna worth visiting by train from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

The train journey to the Jaffna District is itself part of the experience — it passes through the dry-zone north of the island, a landscape rarely seen by visitors who fly or travel exclusively by road. Jaffna city offers Dutch-era fortifications, important Hindu kovils, distinctive cuisine, and ferry access to quieter offshore islands.

Question 5

When did the Northern Railway Line reopen after the civil war?

Accepted Answer

Reconstruction of the Northern Line began after the end of the armed conflict in 2009, with full passenger services to Jaffna restored around 2014. The reopening was seen as a major step in reconnecting the north and south of the island, and small stations including those in the Jaffna District were progressively brought back into service.

Question 6

Do I need to book a train ticket in advance for the Northern Line?

Accepted Answer

Advance booking is strongly advised, especially for reserved seats in first or second class on express services. Demand rises significantly during Tamil festival seasons and national public holidays. Tickets can be purchased at Sri Lanka Railways counters at major stations or through authorised ticketing agents.

Question 7

What language is spoken in the Jaffna District?

Accepted Answer

Tamil is the primary language spoken in Jaffna and the wider Northern Province. English is understood at hotels, guesthouses, and many transport hubs. Sinhala is less commonly spoken here than in the south and central regions of the country.
