Question 1

What is Cargills Square in Polonnaruwa?

Accepted Answer

Cargills Square is a branch of Cargills Ceylon Limited, one of Sri Lanka's oldest retail chains, located in Polonnaruwa town. It serves as a practical shopping stop for locals and tourists visiting the nearby ancient city. The building reflects the colonial-era commercial architecture typical of Sri Lanka's provincial high streets.

Question 2

Is Cargills Square open every day?

Accepted Answer

Cargills stores in Sri Lanka are generally open daily, including weekends and public holidays, though hours may vary by location. It is advisable to check locally upon arrival, particularly during major national holidays when some retail outlets operate on reduced hours.

Question 3

What can I buy at Cargills Square Polonnaruwa?

Accepted Answer

The store stocks packaged foods, beverages, bottled water, snacks, household goods, and basic toiletries — the typical range found across the Cargills chain. It is a convenient place to restock supplies before visiting the Polonnaruwa archaeological park, where on-site facilities are limited.

Question 4

How far is Cargills Square from the Polonnaruwa ancient city ruins?

Accepted Answer

Cargills Square is located in Polonnaruwa town centre, which sits a short drive or tuk-tuk ride from the main entrance of the Polonnaruwa archaeological zone. The exact distance depends on which section of the ancient city you are heading to, as the site is spread over a large area.

Question 5

Is Polonnaruwa worth visiting as a day trip?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Polonnaruwa is one of Sri Lanka's most rewarding UNESCO World Heritage Sites and can be covered in a full day trip from Dambulla, Sigiriya, or Habarana. Arriving early helps you explore the ancient city before the midday heat, leaving the afternoon for the town centre and a return journey.

Question 6

What are the main attractions near Cargills Square in Polonnaruwa?

Accepted Answer

The Polonnaruwa ancient city complex — including the Royal Palace, Gal Vihara, Rankoth Vehera, and the Parakrama Samudra reservoir — is the primary draw for visitors. The Polonnaruwa Museum near the ruins entrance also provides excellent context before exploring the site.

Question 7

How do I travel between Colombo Airport and Polonnaruwa?
