▶️Architectural Features of the Tampita Vihara
Typically constructed on granite pillars around one meter high, the image house is built using timber and sometimes includes walled sections. This style not only provided structural stability but also helped with ventilation, a crucial feature in the hot Sri Lankan climate. Many of these image houses are surrounded by sacred Bodhi trees, adding to their serene and intimate worship atmosphere.

▶️Gmanagoda Sri Sudashanama Viharia
One of the notable examples of Tampita Vihara architecture is the Gmanagoda Sri Sudashanama Viharia in Usapitia, Kandy. Preserved by Sri Lanka’s Archaeology Department, this small temple contains Kandyan-era murals and Buddha statues. The image house can be accessed by a small wooden staircase, with the entire structure made of wood, except for the stone bases.

▶️Bingiriya Tampita Vihara and Unique Features
The Bingiriya Tampita Vihara is an exemplary temple known for its unusually high stone columns, reaching up to 2 meters. The elevated structure allows visitors to walk underneath the image house, which is adorned with exceptional wood craftsmanship and ancient murals from the Kandyan era, showcasing the temple’s architectural complexity.

▶️Doddanta Raja Mahaviara Temple: A Two-Tiered Masterpiece
Located in Maranala, Kagol district, the Doddanta Raja Mahaviara Temple features a two-tiered roof covered with clay tiles. The lower level was used as a preaching hall, while the upper level housed the image room. A veranda surrounds the main shrine room, and the temple also features wooden statues and murals from the Kandyan era, including portraits of historical figures.

▶️Evolution and Preservation of the Tampita Vihara
Originally envisioned as a three-story royal palace, the Doddanta Raja Mahaviara was later converted into a Buddhist temple. Adjacent to the image house are the priest's living quarters and a granary, which are now in disrepair and awaiting restoration. These temples continue to evolve, and preservation efforts are critical to maintaining their cultural and historical significance.
