About this experience
Board a private boat and spend 90 minutes gliding through the mangrove marshes of Madu River. The waterway shifts between dark, canopied tunnels formed by dense mangrove roots and bright open stretches where cormorants and storks dive for fish. Keep your eyes on the banks for crocodiles, water snakes, tree snakes, and wild boars moving through the undergrowth. Along the way, spot traditional prawn and shrimp pots set in the shallows, and pull in at a riverside island to visit an ancient Buddhist temple.
A second island stop introduces you to Sri Lanka's cinnamon trade — pick up a bundle of fresh, high-quality cinnamon to take home. Round off the trip at the outdoor fish massage parlour, where you dangle your feet into a fenced section of the river for a natural scrub (entrance fee payable on the day, not included).
