▶️A Park Connected to Ancient Sri Lankan History
Wilpattu is also linked with Sri Lanka’s ancient history. According to the Mahavamsa, Prince Vijaya is believed to have landed at Tambapanni, near Kudiramalai Point, in 543 BCE. This historic coastal point lies along the western boundary of Wilpattu National Park, adding cultural and historical importance to the region.
▶️Villus – The Natural Lakes of Wilpattu
The name Wilpattu comes from its many natural lakes, known as villus. These rainwater-filled basins are spread across the park and create a unique landscape that supports wildlife throughout the year. With more than 100 lakes and tanks, Wilpattu offers one of the most distinctive safari environments in Sri Lanka.
▶️Wildlife and Safari Experience
Wilpattu is home to a wide range of animals, including Sri Lankan leopards, elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo, sambar deer, and spotted deer. The park is especially popular among wildlife lovers hoping to spot the endangered Sri Lankan leopard, while its quieter safari routes offer a more relaxed and natural experience compared to busier parks.
▶️Birdlife and Biodiversity
Wilpattu is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with common species including painted storks, openbills, little cormorants, junglefowl, owls, eagles, terns, and gulls. The park’s rich mix of forests, wetlands, salt marshes, mangroves, and floodplain habitats makes it one of Sri Lanka’s most important biodiversity zones.
▶️Best Time to Visit Wilpattu
The ideal time to visit Wilpattu is generally between February and October, when safari access is easier and wildlife sightings can be rewarding. Although safaris are available throughout the year, heavy rains can fill the villus and make some routes difficult to access.
