In the early 14th century, the Port of Colombo, originally called Columtha, was the first port of call for merchants from China, India, and Persia, traveling along the maritime silk route. They were drawn to Sri Lanka by its exotic spices. Over time, Colombo became a major trading hub, recognized by the Western world after the arrival of Loreno de Almeida in 1505. Today, Colombo is one of the busiest ports, strategically located at the crossroads of east and west sea routes.

▶️Strategic Importance of Colombo
Sri Lanka’s strategic location and the Port of Colombo’s connectivity make it a key global logistics hub. As the number one port in the region for connectivity, it supports major shipping lines and can accommodate the largest container vessels. The port has become a significant transshipment hub for the Indian subcontinent, handling goods from across the world. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) governs and regulates the port, continuously transforming it to boost Sri Lanka's economy.

▶️Port of Colombo’s High-Performing Terminals
The Port of Colombo operates five high-performing terminals, including the Jaya Container Terminal (JCT), South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT), Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT), Colombo East Container Terminal, and Colombo West International Terminal. These terminals play a critical role in handling Sri Lanka’s maritime traffic, with each terminal contributing to the port's continued growth and efficiency.

▶️Technological and Environmental Innovation
CICT, Sri Lanka’s only deep-water terminal, is equipped to handle the world’s largest container vessels. It has led the way in transforming Colombo into a key transshipment hub by accommodating ultra-large vessels. In addition, CICT has converted all its RTGs to electric, reducing carbon emissions by 40%. These initiatives highlight Colombo’s commitment to sustainability and operational excellence.

▶️Expansion of Colombo Port
The Port of Colombo continues to expand. The Colombo East Container Terminal, with its deep water and vast docking space, is vital for accommodating large ships and welcoming international cruise liners. The new West Container Terminal, set to be fully operational by 2025, will be Colombo’s first fully automated deep-water container terminal. This terminal is expected to add 3.2 million TEUs of annual capacity to the port.
