Kadurugoda Viharaya | The Mysterious Ancient Stupas of Jaffna, Sri Lanka
▶️Jaffna and the Forgotten Ancient Marketplace
Jaffna, the capital of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, was historically connected to an important suburb known as Nelur, which served as a medieval capital. Just 10 kilometers from the city center, near Chunnakam, lies the ancient archaeological site of Kantharodai, once a major marketplace and trade hub during the period of classical antiquity, supporting regional commerce and early urban life.

▶️Protohistoric Urban Settlement and Archaeological Importance
Artifacts uncovered at the site reveal that Kantharodai was an important urban settlement from the protohistoric period. Ancient texts from Kandy refer to this location as Kurodai and Kadurugoda, identifying it as a significant archaeological landmark. Today, Kadurugoda Viharaya is maintained under the protection of the Sri Lankan Army due to its cultural and historical value.

▶️Discovery of the Bubble-Shaped Stupas
In 1966, the Sri Lankan Department of Archaeology conducted formal excavations at the site and discovered 57 small and medium-sized Buddhist stupas. Historical accounts state that 60 monks who had attained Arhatship once resided in Puvenativu, and later perished due to food poisoning. The stupas were constructed to commemorate these monks and to enshrine their sacred relics.

▶️Unique Construction and Design
Only a small number of the original stupas remain today. These structures are perfectly symmetrical and bubble-shaped, built from coral stone blocks featuring distinctive indentations. Their refined geometry and material choice distinguish Kadurugoda from other stupa complexes found across Sri Lanka.
▶️Encroachment and Shrinking Sacred Land
Originally spanning nearly three hectares, the archaeological site has now been reduced to less than half its size due to human settlement encroachment. Urban expansion has slowly consumed large portions of the sacred grounds, threatening the preservation of remaining structures.

▶️Unsolved Mysteries of Kadurugoda
To this day, there is no archaeological evidence explaining why the stupas were built in varying sizes. Scholars speculate that the seniority or age of the monks may have influenced their dimensions. Until further scientific excavation is conducted, the origins and deeper meaning of Kadurugoda Viharaya remain shrouded in mystery.
