▶️Cashew Tree Growth and Harvesting
Cashew trees thrive in tropical lowland areas with pronounced dry and hot seasons. While traditional trees can grow up to 14 meters tall, dwarf varieties—reaching about 6 meters—are more profitable due to faster maturity and higher yields. Cashews are typically harvested around two months after flowering, making timing a crucial factor in production.

▶️From Cashew Apple to Processing
What grows on the tree is the cashew apple, with the cashew seed forming below it. Once the apple is removed, the nut enters a largely manual processing sequence. The first step involves separating the hard outer shell from the seed using specialized machinery that slices the shell open carefully to avoid damaging the cashew inside.

▶️Shelling, Drying, and Safety Measures
The cashew shell contains oil compounds that are potent skin irritants, making handling a delicate task. Although shells are mostly discarded, valuable chemicals can be extracted for industrial uses such as biotechnology and nanotechnology. Once shelled, the cashews are oven-dried before undergoing manual peeling to remove the thin outer skin.

After cleaning, cashews are baked again and emerge as ready-to-eat nuts. Proper storage requires airtight containers at room temperature. Cashews are nutrient-rich, offering healthy fats, protein, fiber, and essential vitamins while remaining cholesterol- and sodium-free. Their labor-intensive processing and seasonality explain their relatively high cost. Cashews are also popular in vegan diets as a plant-based dairy substitute.
