Sri Lanka is home to five major botanical gardens managed by the Department of National Botanic Gardens, each reflecting the island’s diverse ecological zones. These gardens function as centers for conservation, research, education, and public recreation. Among them, Seetawaka Wet Zone Botanical Garden stands out as the newest and most ecologically focused, dedicated to preserving Sri Lanka’s threatened wet zone flora.

▶️Location and Establishment of Seetawaka Botanical Garden
Nestled in the lush surroundings of Avissawella in Sri Lanka’s Western Province, the Seetawaka Wet Zone Botanical Garden offers a peaceful retreat from urban life. Established in 2014 and covering 42 hectares, it is the fifth botanical garden in the country. The land was once used for rubber and tea plantations before being abandoned and later transformed into a conservation sanctuary.

▶️A Sanctuary for Endemic and Endangered Plants
Development of the garden began in 2008 after recognizing the ecological importance of the region. Today, it plays a vital role in conserving endangered plant species, especially those native to Sri Lanka’s wet zone and the Sinharaja rainforest region. Situated about 100 meters above sea level, the garden benefits from a tropical climate and a natural stream that nourishes its rich vegetation.

It also provides a natural habitat for birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and fish. In recent years, the garden has been recognized as a bird hotspot, supported by dense foliage, water sources, and large kumuk trees.
