Pokkali (Traditional Rice)

Pokkali is a well-regarded red rice variety with deep roots in Sri Lankan agricultural tradition. What sets it apart from most other cultivars is its remarkable ability to thrive in soils with elevated salinity levels — a quality that makes it particularly well suited to the coastal environments where it has long been grown.

This short film offers a glimpse into the character and cultivation of Pokkali, a crop that continues to play an important role in Sri Lanka's rice-farming heritage.

Characteristics of the Pokkali Plant

The Pokkali plant grows to a culm height of approximately 130 cm and typically bears around 10 tillers per plant. One of its most practical qualities is a relatively swift growing cycle: the crop can be harvested within three and a half months from seeding. Its tolerance to soil salinity is especially notable, allowing it to flourish in coastal regions where many other rice varieties would struggle.

Yield and Agricultural Importance

Under good conditions, Pokkali has a potential yield of around 60 to 80 bushels per acre. Beyond its productivity, the variety holds significance in rice research and development — it is used as a parent plant in rice varietal improvement programmes, contributing its salt-tolerant traits to the breeding of newer cultivars.

Where Pokkali Is Grown

Today, Pokkali is cultivated along Sri Lanka's south-western coastal belt. It is a staple crop in the Hambantota and Puttalam districts, both areas where high soil salinity levels make it one of the most dependable choices for farmers. Its continued cultivation in these regions reflects both its agronomic resilience and its enduring place in local food traditions.
