Perched high above the ancient city of Kandy, Amaya Hills sits in one of the most historically significant locations in Sri Lanka. Known as the Palace in the Hills, the hotel overlooks the thick, forest-covered hills of Heerassagala and sits approximately 7 km from the city centre, while Kandy itself lies just over 100 km from Colombo. The property's setting carries a deep cultural resonance — Kandy was the last Sinhalese kingdom to resist colonialism, and that proud heritage is woven into every aspect of the hotel's character.

The retreat is designed to embody the spirit of this ancient city, offering guests an experience that moves between modern comfort and time-honoured tradition. From contemporary amenities to ancient Ayurvedic treatments, Amaya Hills presents itself as a genuine haven from busy city life.

Location and Getting There

Kandy's central railway station provides local and express train services to many destinations across the island, and the central bus station is also within close proximity of the hotel. Transport options to and from Amaya Hills are readily accessible, making it a practical as well as atmospheric base for exploring the region.

Rooms and Suites

Amaya Hills offers 91 Superior and Deluxe rooms, each with an interior that reflects the historical architecture and atmosphere of ancient Kandy. Every room includes a private balcony with views either of the surrounding mountain range or the valley below. In-room amenities include cable television, a mini bar, coffee and tea making facilities, and air-conditioning.

Five Junior Suites provide a particularly spacious experience, each featuring a generous bedroom and a private sunset balcony designed for taking in the beautiful surroundings. A lounge area with a Kandyan Sofa bed allows guests to relax in comfort, with modern conveniences on hand throughout.

The hotel also offers four additional suites, each arranged across two levels. The lower floor holds a master bedroom with an attached bathroom and a sitting area, while a loft bedroom with a second bathroom occupies the upper floor. This suite area, known as the Uththara Prasada, can be reached from the lobby or from the pool area via a stone stairway. These suites are furnished with antiques and are designed to immerse guests in the local culture of Kandy.

Heritage and Atmosphere

What distinguishes Amaya Hills is its deliberate connection to Sri Lanka's Sinhalese heritage. The Kingdom of Kandy holds a special place in the island's history, and the hotel's architecture, décor, and cultural references reflect that legacy with quiet pride. Whether guests are drawn by the cool hill-country climate, the panoramic views, or the sense of living history that pervades the ancient city below, Amaya Hills offers a retreat that is as meaningful as it is comfortable.
