The Villa by Contemporary Ceylon is a boutique beach villa in Wadduwa with seven rooms, run by the Sri Lankan hospitality company Contemporary Ceylon. It sits on a lawn of coconut palms that runs down to the sand, with a 20 m natural stone pool, a jacuzzi and several places to eat, from the dining room to the seaside and a gazebo by the pool. It suits couples, families and groups of friends alike, and is also used for private celebrations and destination weddings.
The villa is at 40/17 Samanthara Road in Wadduwa, on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, with direct access to the beach. Colombo is about an hour away by car. Wadduwa railway station, on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle, is about 0.4 km away, and the neighbouring town of Waskaduwa lies a few kilometres to the south.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 75 km from the villa by road, and the drive around Colombo and down the coast usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The seven rooms are split between an Ocean Suite, Deluxe Pool View and Deluxe Double Rooms, Colonial Rooms and a Premier Garden View Room, with a mix of king-size and twin beds. Every room has air conditioning, a safe, a mini-fridge, a coffee station, a hair dryer and satellite television, and there is free Wi-Fi across the property.
The kitchen cooks modern interpretations of Sri Lankan food alongside Western dishes, served as a three-course menu, à la carte, bar bites or buffets for groups, with a children's menu and barbecues. Breakfast is Western or Sri Lankan. Meals can be taken indoors, outdoors, by the sea or in the gazebo beside the pool, and there is a bar for drinks. Guests can also join a cooking class to learn how to make kottu.
Most days at the villa are spent between the beach, the pool and the jacuzzi, with a games room with a pool table for the evenings and outdoor sports. Wadduwa is a quiet beach town, and further south along the coast are the turtle hatcheries of the south-west coast and the historic city of Galle with its fort, while Colombo is close enough for a day of shopping and sightseeing.
