The Blue Water is a beach hotel in Wadduwa designed by Geoffrey Bawa with Milroy Perera, and the last hotel Bawa supervised on site before illness ended his career. Built between 1996 and 1998 on a former coconut plantation, it stretches between the Indian Ocean and the coastal railway line, its low buildings set around gardens and an outdoor pool that opens towards the beach. It has 100 rooms and 5 suites on three floors.
The hotel stands at Thalpitiya in Wadduwa, on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, directly behind the beach and among the coconut palms of the old estate. Colombo is roughly 30 km to the north along the coast. The nearest railway stations are Pinwatte, about 1 km away, and Wadduwa, about 2 km away, both on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 75 km from the hotel by road, and the drive around Colombo and down the coast usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the hotel in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to The Blue Water.
Every room has its own balcony or terrace for privacy. The hotel lists Deluxe Rooms and Bawa Rooms, followed by Club Suites, Executive Suites and a Presidential Suite. Bathrooms have both a shower and a separate bathtub, and some rooms have a jacuzzi bath. The suites sit on the upper level, with their own sitting and dining areas.
The Admiral's Room is the main restaurant for international dining, with tables indoors or on the terrace. The Dragon Boat serves Chinese cuisine, and The Seven Seas is the round-the-clock café for coffee, tea and lighter meals. For drinks there is The Porthole Bar, a cocktail lounge; The Clipper Bar beside the pool for drinks and snacks between swims; and The Deck, an open-air lounge for watching the sun go down over the ocean.
The Blue Water Hotel Spa offers massages and treatments using aromatic oils, herbs and spices. Besides the main pool there is a children's pool, a gym and an outdoor tennis court. The hotel is also a popular wedding venue, with a banquet hall added in 2008 and wedding packages for couples marrying by the sea.
Wadduwa is a quiet beach town, so most days here are spent on the sand, in the pool or at the spa. Water sports can be arranged along the coast, and further south are the turtle hatcheries of the south-west coast, the historic city of Galle with its fort, and Mirissa, the base for whale-watching trips in season. Colombo is close enough for a day of shopping and sightseeing. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the hotel.
