Gedara Villa is a small heritage bungalow in Kalutara North, a short drive south of Wadduwa on Sri Lanka's south-west coast. Run by VC Villas and Resorts, it has seven air-conditioned rooms set around a garden and a swimming pool, with its own chefs cooking for guests, which makes it feel more like a private house by the sea than a hotel.
The villa stands on Fonseka Place in Kalutara North, about 300 metres from Kalutara Beach and roughly 5 km south of Wadduwa. Kalutara North railway station, on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle, is about 0.6 km away, and Kalutara South station about 1.4 km. Colombo is around 44 km to the north.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 75 km from the villa by road, and the drive around Colombo and down the coast usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. There are seven rooms in all: five air-conditioned double rooms and two air-conditioned triple rooms for families or small groups. Each has a private bathroom, and the rooms look out over the garden. With so few rooms, the whole bungalow can suit a family or a group of friends travelling together.
Meals are served in the villa's dining and lounge area, where the chefs at the villa prepare Sri Lankan, Chinese and Western dishes. There is also a sun terrace and outdoor seating in the garden.
Kalutara Beach is a few minutes' walk from the gate, and the rest of the day can be spent by the pool or in the garden. In town, the Kalutara Bodhiya temple stands beside the Kalu Ganga, and the Richmond Castle mansion is a short drive inland. Further south are the Bentota river, Brief Garden, the garden estate of Bevis Bawa, and the historic city of Galle with its fort.
