Ayana Sea is a small boutique resort overlooking the Indian Ocean at Molligoda in Wadduwa, a fishing village on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka. It is set in about two acres of lawns with coconut palms and koi ponds, and its two-storey villas and suites are laid out around the pool and garden, many of them with their own plunge pool.
The resort is on Samanthara Road at Molligoda in Wadduwa, a few hundred metres from the beach. Colombo is roughly 33 km to the north along the coast, and Wadduwa Railway Station, on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle, is about 1.4 km away.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 75 km from the resort by road, and the drive around Colombo and down the coast usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the resort in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The accommodation is in spacious, air-conditioned villas and suites in a range of layouts, each with a balcony or terrace, a minibar and bathrobes. The pool villas on the ground floor have a private plunge pool opening onto the garden, while the ocean-view villas look out over the sea, and there are family rooms for guests travelling with children.
Besides the private plunge pools there are two shared pool areas set in the garden, and a sky restaurant and bar on the upper level. The spa offers Ayurvedic treatments and massages with trained therapists, and Wi-Fi and parking are free for guests.
Wadduwa is a quiet beach town, so most days here are spent on the sand, by the pool or at the spa. Further south are the turtle hatcheries of the south-west coast, the historic city of Galle with its fort, and Mirissa, the base for whale-watching trips in season, while Colombo is close enough for a day of shopping and sightseeing.
