Vis Ta Vie is a six-room boutique beach house of the Thema Collection on Kamburugamuwa beach, just east of Mirissa, with direct access to the sand, a pool and an ocean view from every room. Its name is French for "live your life", and it was first conceived as a Mediterranean-style holiday villa; today it pairs bright, sea-coloured rooms with Sri Lankan and Mediterranean cooking and a strong seafood leaning.
Every room has air conditioning and a fan, free Wi-Fi, a television, a minibar, a safe, tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes and slippers, and each is decorated in its own colour scheme. There are small living rooms on each floor, which makes the house feel more like a home than a hotel. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
Children under six stay free in their parents' bedding; older children cost extra, and from twelve they count as adults. With only six rooms, a group can take the whole house, which sleeps up to seventeen adults.
The kitchen works from à la carte and set menus built on local produce, with fresh fish from the nearby seafood markets, and blends Sri Lankan dishes with European and Mediterranean influences. Meals can be served wherever you like: in your room, in the garden or by the pool. The hotel also runs cookery demonstrations.
The beach is the main attraction, and the hotel has its own direct access to it. Back at the house there is a pool beside the beach, a selection of board games, and free parking. The hotel arranges excursions along the coast, including whale watching by catamaran or shared boat, surfing lessons at Weligama, snorkelling at Polhena, cycling, and visits to a village temple supported by the hotel's community work. Thema says that around 45 per cent of its staff are recruited from the local community.
Kamburugamuwa is a quieter stretch of sand than the main Mirissa Beach, with its cafés, bars and seafood restaurants, which is a short drive west, along with the harbour where the whale-watching boats leave and the viewpoint at Coconut Tree Hill. The surfer beach at Madiha is close by to the east, and the sheltered reef at Polhena, near Matara, is good for snorkelling. Further afield, the hotel runs trips to Weligama for surfing, to the mangroves of Koggala Lagoon, to the Kanneliya rainforest and to Galle Fort.
Yes. Kamburugamuwa station on the coastal line between Colombo and Matara serves the village. Let the hotel or us know your train so that someone can meet you for the short ride to the house.
The hotel puts the journey from Bandaranaike International Airport at about two hours. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Vis Ta Vie, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits couples and families who want a small, friendly beach house with good food rather than a big resort, and groups who would like the whole place to themselves. For more choice along this coast see our places to stay in Mirissa.
