Turyaa Kalutara is a large Aitken Spence beach resort at Waskaduwa, just north of Kalutara, where every room and suite faces the Indian Ocean. Palm-lined lawns run down to the beach, and it lies about 37 kilometres south of Colombo and roughly 80 kilometres from the international airport, close enough for a first or last night by the sea, with a pool, a spa and several restaurants and bars on site.
All rooms have their own balcony, patio or veranda overlooking the sea, along with air conditioning, a minibar, a coffee maker, satellite television, internet access, Grohe bathroom fittings and twice-daily housekeeping. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
The Plus categories, the Family Suites and the Junior Suite are few in number, so book them early if you have your heart set on one.
Pink Lobster is the à la carte restaurant, open from late morning until late evening, and Taaza is the hotel's evening restaurant. Twist, the pool bar in the south wing, looks over the sea and is known for its cocktails. The kitchens cook international dishes alongside fresh seafood from the local catch.
Beyond the beach and the pool there is a spa offering massages with herbal oils, the Aayu Gym with cardio machines, weights and qualified trainers, a library, a nightclub, a pool table and other sports facilities. The beach in front of the hotel is public rather than private, as all beaches in Sri Lanka are. The hotel can also help guests with limited mobility; mention any needs when you book.
Kalutara takes its name from the Kalu Ganga, the Black River, which reaches the sea at the town, where the narrow sandbar of Calido Beach separates river and ocean. The gleaming white dagoba of the Kalutara Bodhiya stands beside the river, its hollow interior painted with 74 murals of the Jataka stories. A little inland is Richmond Castle, a country house built in 1896 in a mix of Indian and British styles and set in a 42-acre (17-hectare) fruit garden. Galle Fort is about 50 minutes south on the Southern Expressway, making an easy day trip.
Yes. The Coast Line runs close to the shore here: Kalutara North railway station is about 3.5 kilometres away in a straight line, and Wadduwa railway station about 4 kilometres. Both are a short tuk-tuk ride from the hotel.
The resort is about 80 kilometres by road from Bandaranaike International Airport, south through Colombo or on the expressways around it. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Turyaa Kalutara, which takes you to the door.
It suits families and groups who want a full-service resort with plenty going on, and travellers looking for a beach stay within easy reach of Colombo and the airport.
